    1. How do I find books in the Library?

    Search the FGCU Library catalog by title, author, or subject.

    2. How do I find out if FGCU owns a particular journal?

    There are two methods for locating the journals owned by FGCU library.

    Method # 1:
    Check for a journal's electronic availability (full-text) through FGCU Library's E-Journals . (FGCU provides access to over 23,000 e-journals. Not all of them are found through the Library Catalog.)

    1. From the library's homepage, click on E-Journals.

    2. Enter the journal title in the Search box: "Title begins with ________. " Example: Journal of Public Policy and Marketing.

    3. Note the year full-text coverage begins, and click on the linked collection that contains the date needed.

     

    Method # 2.

    Check for journals that are available in print (paper) and/or on Microfilm. (FGCU has over 2000 journals in print and/or microfilm). A large percentage of the online journals are cataloged here as well.

    1. From the library's homepage, click on FGCU Library Catalog.
    2. Click on “Journals/Serials” near the top.
    3. Enter the journal name after “Browse organized lists,  Title beings with ______.”
      For example:  Nature
    4. In the results screen, click on the journal title.

    5. Under Location, click on the call number to see if the issue you need is held by the library .

    6. Make note of the Call number (e.g., Q1.N2) and proceed to the Periodicals or Microfilm Section of the Library.
    3. How can I get help to find relevant material on my topic?

    FGCU Librarians have created many research guides that include carefully selected resources: books, online databases and web resources.   Browse the categories to see if there is one covering your topic.

    4. How do I find an online database for my topic?

    Over 300 databases for students, faculty and staff can be located by title or by subject area from the Databases page .  If you know the database title you can search it in the comprehensive database list or to find an appropriate database, search the broad subject categories.

    5. How do I find full-text sources?

    There are databases that contain a large percentage of full-text resources. Choose an appropriate one from the list of Multidisciplinary Databases.

    6. How can I learn to do research and use the FGCU Library effectively?

    FGCU Library staff offers general orientation sessions to introduce new users to the many services offered by the Library at the beginning of each semester. Click here for the Basic Library Training schedule. Alternatively, you can choose the self-paced Web tutorials by using the Tutorials & Handouts link from the homepage.

    7. How do I access electronic resources from a remote (off-campus) location?

    FGCU Library resources can be accessed from any location (campus or off campus). Click here to get the Remote Access Information.

    8. How can I borrow Library materials that the FGCU Library doesn't own?

    FGCU Library provides Interlibrary Loan service for FGCU students, faculty and staff. 

    9. What is the lending period for library items?

    The lending period varies from item to item and the status of the borrower. Please refer to the Interlibrary Loan off the homepage to register.

    10. Where can I return library material?

    A book drop is located outside in parking lot one across from the Family Resource Center or at the circulation desk.   Interlibrary Loan materials must be returned to the Circulation Desk of the library.  Material is not considered returned until the item has been checked out in the FGCU library system.  Materials cannot be returned to non-FGCU organizations such as public libraries.

    11. What are the fines for material not returned on time?

    General collection fines are $0.25 per day for each item checked out. Reserve material is charged at the rate of $0.25 per hour. Once the material has reached an overdue period of 35 days, the item is considered lost and a bill for $51.15 per item plus overdue fines will be generated. Bills will be sent to you via mail. FGCU charges fines for overdue material solely to secure their prompt return or renewal.

    12. Where can I pay my Library Fines?

    FGCU students, faculty and staff must pay at the FGCU Cashier's Office. SUS, Community College, and Community patrons may pay at the FGCU Cashier's Office or they may pay at the FGCU Library Circulation Desk by check only. All patrons should keep payment receipts as proof of payment.

    13. Where do I go to access course Reserves?

    A course reserve search form on the Library web site has been provided where you can enter your course description number, instructor's name, or course reference number, and get a list of all the course reserve materials available for a specific class. Course reserves come in two formats, scanned and hard copy. Scanned course reserves can be accessed in full-text by clicking on the hyperlink provided through the course reserve search form. Hard copy course reserves are available at the circulation desk. Bring your student ID card and know your course number in order for the staff to locate them.

    14. Why won't my scanned course reserve reading open on my computer?

    All digital course reserves are in pdf (portable document format) format.You will need the most recent version of Adobe Acrobat Reader to access them.  Adobe Acrobat Reader is licensed by Adobe Inc. as freely distributable software. The license text and other Adobe information can be downloaded from http://www.adobe.com/.

    15. How long can I keep a course reserve?  Is there an overdue penalty?

    Most of the time hard copy course reserves are available for a 2 hour check out period and must be used within the library. Occasionally, depending on the number of copies, items are available longer. The loan period will be noted on the item's reserve label. When a course reserve item is late, the overdue fine is $0.25 per hour.

    16. Where can Faculty get the COURSE RESERVE REQUEST FORM for placing items on Course Reserve?

    The online Course Reserve Request Forms (Books & Media, Articles & Book Chapters)
    can be accessed from the Library Website. Faculty can cut and paste information into the forms and then print out the form and deliver it to the Library Circulation Desk along with the items that are to be placed on course reserve. This forms is also available at the Circulation Desk.

    Adobe Acrobat is your all-purpose, all-platform Portable Document Format (PDF) viewer. It is licensed by Adobe, Inc. as freely distributable software. For the license text and other Adobe information, click here!

    20. How do I print from an Open Lab Workstation?

    You need a Cash Card with enough available funds for your printout. Cash Cards may be purchased in the vending machine beside the elevator.

    • Select Print as you normally would.
    • Go to the Print Management Station nearest you.
    • You will be prompted for your username.This is the same username you used to logon to the PC. (ex. GUEST or JSMITH)
    • The Print Management Station will then list the print jobs associated with this username.
    • Select the item you'd like to print and click on the PRINT button.
    • The cash card reader will deduct the funds and the job will print.

    21. How do I obtain a cash card or check my balance?

    A cash card may be purchased in the Library beside the elevator. The cost of a blank card is $1 and the balance may be updated by reinserting the card into the dispenser and depositing the dollar amount that you would like encoded upon the card.
    To check your balance, simply insert your card into any card reader (they are attached to the copiers and print management stations) or Cash Card Dispenser and read the display shown.
