Green Initiatives:

As part of Library Technology’s ongoing commitment to efficient use of technology resources, recycling, and power savings,  since January 2007, approximately 150 of the library’s computers have been configured to automatically shut-down for a minimum of 66 hours per week (with longer shut down times during winter breaks and intersession periods). Since 2007, an estimate of the power savings to the university:

144,620 kWh saved
193,790 lbs of CO2 emissions reduced
266 trees saved
355 barrels of oil saved
$14,535 of university funds saved
(calculations as of June 1, 2010)

In addition, since late 2008 the library labs have been using 100% recycled paper.  Recently we have extended the 100% recycled paper use to library faculty and staff as well.

Desktop Security:

Security for the desktops in the open lab is implemented in layers, which provides a more comprehensive yet less intrusive control over the PC’s and allows patrons to use the standard Windows interface. The security system is intended to protect the open lab PC’s and the network from innocent blunders and malicious experimentation.
