Lab

The Technology:

Coordinate and support Library related serves and network applications.  This environment includes servers/peripherals; web servers, document imaging server,interlibrary loan systems, printing systems, various file servers, database and application servers.

The Library website including access to such services as Interlibrary loan forms, electronic resources, course reserve materials, online book renewals, subject research guides, online catalog, reference help, and our hosted web sites.

Public computing lab and library operations, in operation 90 hours per week.  This facility supports 115 seat computing lab, 10 seat reference computing lab, 15 seat intructional lab, 4 digital film, music and print imaging computer stations, stacks computers, public service computers, print management stations, reference stations, internet kiosks, student assistants workstations and laser printers.  There are over forty different Library and curriculum applications supported on these workstations.

Provide technology support to library faculty and staff in areas FGCU computing network and systems, available technology resources on campus, hardware and software support, wireless access, general computing support and troubleshooting, laptop support including networking, virus support, file and documentation support, general application instruction for the MS Office suite, multimedia digitization, document imaging, sound and video editing, library management applications: Aleph, Illiad, EzProxy, Contribute, Docutek, E-Resources Suites,

Library Server Support
Coordinate and support Library related servers and network applications.  This environment includes 13 servers/peripherals; primary web servers, document imaging server, domain controllers, backup servers, Ill servers, print servers, various file servers, database servers, and proxy servers.

Critical staff functions

  • LAN administration of all Library servers and the related domain to include; network services and protocols, network printers, print management system, WWW server services, network security, remote access, user account maintenance, and server hardware/software installation and maintenance
  • Monitor status and performance of systems and take action as necessary
  • Recommend and implement system upgrades
  • Provide documentation on all systems
  • Provides network recommendations on facility expansions
  • Inform Library personal, Help Desk and IT of down times and upgrades
  • Coordination with other campus computing units on campus wide network changes, hub upgrades or changes, cable installations, firewall issues, network backbone additions or changes, and data administration specific to the Library

Library Open Computer Lab
One public computer lab (Library main floor), in operation 90 hours per week.  This facility supports 105 multimedia desktop computers, digital imaging computer, stacks computers, public service computers,  print management stations, reference stations, internet kiosks, student assistants workstations and laser printers.  There are over forty different Library and curriculum applications supported on these workstations. Critical staff functions

  • Install, maintain, and troubleshoot computer hardware and software
  • Participate in the design and implementation of a consistent lab standards across the University to include user access policies and interfaces
  • Install and maintain a print management system to monitor and charge for printing services
  • Schedule, train, and manage student assistants
  • Develop and implement hardware and software security procedures in the lab
  • Assist in the selection and acquisition of Library computing hardware
  • Provide usage and application statistics on the computer lab activities
  • Provide basic software and computer instruction and technical support to lab patrons including students, general public, staff and faculty
  • Manage licensing compliance and coordinate licensing with IT for course specific software
  • Coordinate other campus computing units on maintaining consistent lab standards
  • Install and Maintain Library specific applications and hardware
  • Provide indirect hardware and software support to 25 fulltime staff and 13 temporary staff

Library Website Design and Development
The Florida Gulf Coast University Library has taken advantage of the popularity and usefulness of the World Wide Web to provide access to our services and information regardless of physical boundaries. The Library website includes access to such services as Interlibrary loan forms, electronic resources, course reserve materials, online book renewals, subject research guides, online catalog, reference help, and our hosted web sites.

Critical staff functions

  • Database development and management for various services within the Library with connections to online forms; interlibrary loan, course reserve, and Caloosahatchee documents collection
  • Establish and maintain internet access to electronic resources with a variety of vendors through independent contracts and SUS consortium purchases
  • Provide technical support for the document imaging/scanning environment for online Library course reserve materials.
  • Design, develop, and maintain all HTML pages on the Library website. 
  • Convert subject guide documents submitted by Library personnel to HTML pages and post to the website
  • Provide technical guidance and consultation to Library personal on new web technologies
  • Develop and maintain website analysis data for Library Administration
  • Periodically the Library will receive grants from community partnerships to develop services supporting research and environmental needs. These grants include web site development, document imaging, and database administration which is developed and maintained by the Systems office.
  • Ensure the Library website is within FGCU World Wide Web standards
