Library Services
There are many opportunities for donating to the
FGCU Library. We welcome monetary donations and accept gifts of books
and other information resources that enhance the strength of
the collections and support the University’s instructional
programs.
|
| Guidelines |
Your gifts are tax deductible; however, the Library will not make appraisals of gift materials for tax purposes. Gifts and donations will be recognized in writing. The following guidelines are intended to inform prospective donors of the most beneficial types of gifts and the circumstances under which the library accepts them.
|
| Monetary Donations |
You may direct your monetary donation to a specific program
or need in the Library (i.e. a specific subject area or
for specific equipment) or your gift may be unrestricted,
thus enabling the Library to use the funds in the areas
of greatest need. All such gifts are accepted in our Library
Business Services office, which arranges for the money to
be deposited to the appropriate fund.
|
| Library Materials |
Donated materials are expected to meet the same standards
of quality and relevance to the collection as new titles.
The Library strongly encourages that donors give advance
notification to the Library in terms of the type and number
of items considered for donation. This kind of information
allows the Librarians to evaluate the collection before
it arrives at the Library and to encourage or discourage
the donor’s generosity at the appropriate time. The
donated materials should support the curriculum and the
mission of the Library.
Library materials are accepted with
the understanding that they become the property of FGCU
upon receipt, and that the Library may make all necessary
decisions as to their retention, location, cataloging treatment,
and other considerations relating to their use and disposition.
We cannot accept donations that require delivery assistance
inside the library without an appointment.
Please review our Collection Development policies pertaining
to gifts at http://library.fgcu.edu/CSD/Policies/gifts.htm

| Endowment Gifts |
Monetary donations may be made for immediate use or to
build the Library’s endowment to secure the Library’s
future. An endowment allows for the expenditure of net earnings
on the gift but never allows for the expenditure of any
of the original gift's principal. This way the gift goes
on forever. The FGCU Foundation policy allows the library
a set percentage of the market value, typically 5%, as of
December 31st each year. For example, a $50,000 gift would
generate $2,500 per year for the purpose intended ($50,000
x 5%), provided there are sufficient earnings to pay out
the $2,500. If you are interested in making a donation to
the Library’s endowment, please contact Library Business
Services at 239-590-7603.

| Library Expansion |
In 2006 , the library completed its first building
expansion. In addition to more study areas, an expanded
computer lab, and additional book stacks, we now have
a library café, instruction rooms, and plans for special collections
such as the Center for Southwest Florida History and Culture.
This expansion presents many naming opportunities within
our new library to recognize individual donors, corporations,
and foundations, or to honor or serve as memorials to friends
and loved ones. In addition, the Library seeks planning, implementation and ongoing support for its Center for Southwest Florida History and Culture. For additional information on opportunities, please contact Library Business Services
at 239-590-7603. Library Business Services will work with
you in conjunction with the University Advancement office.
