Help for Instructors

Alethea helps instructors create engaging reading assignments for students with little effort. To get started at FGCU, instructors just need to go to the canvas course in which you want to use Alethea. Instructions for setting up your reading assignments and making the most of them can be found at the Alethea help center.

Adding Texts to Alethea

The star of the show in a Alethea assignment is the text itself. The FGCU Library can help you source texts that can be used in Alethea assignments. There are a few things you should know about uploaded texts to Alethea.

  • Texts must be in a PDF or EPUB format.
  • The text in the PDF or EPUB must have had Optical Character Recognition (OCR) applied, meaning that there is machine readable text in the document. You can test to see if OCR has been applied to your PDF by opening it and seeing if you can highlight text in the document. If you are not able to highlight text in your PDF, you can use Adobe Acrobat Pro or the free Adobe OCR tool online to apply OCR text recognition to your PDF.
  • There is a 100 page or 100 MB limit for files in Alethea.
  • You can use downloaded PDF chapters from library ebooks or downloaded PDF articles from library databases in Alethea.

Copyright Considerations

Copyright law and "fair use" still applies to use of texts in Alethea, just like it does for any text or reading you would post in Canvas or distribute in paper to students in a course. Here are some guidelines to be aware of.

  • A journal article that is available in library databases can be uploaded to Alethea without restriction. These articles are always available to all students through our licenses so that may be used freely.
  • Library ebooks are purchased with varying user licenses and digital rights management restrictions.
    • Library owned ebooks that have "unlimited access" or "unlimited user" licenses can be used in their entirety in Alethea. You may need to download chapters individually and upload them separately.
    • Library owned ebooks that have 1 or 3 user licenses can not be used in their entirety in Alethea. You may use portions of the book, not to exceed 15% as a rule of thumb, under fair use guidelines. You may download selected chapter and upload to Alethea.
    • Library owned ebooks that allow you to download the entire book in a PDF without additional apps or software can be considered "unlimited access."
  • Library books that are only available in a physical format cannot be completely digitized and uploaded in Alethea. Portions of those books, not to exceed 15% as a rule of thumb, may be scanned and uploaded to Alethea.
