The Project on Race & Gender in Science & Medicine (RGSM) is an intellectual center that promotes scholarship, research, policy and public education for understanding how scientific, medical and technological ideas and practices contribute to and construct notions of human differences in our multi-racial, multiethnic-society. This project aims to be the leading center in the world for research, policy, and public education, on the connections between race, ethnicity, gender and science, technology, and medicine with respect to peoples of African descent worldwide.
Recent studies have shown that despite the improvements in the overall health of the country, racial and ethnic minorities experience a lower quality of health care—they are less likely to receive routine medical care and face higher rates of morbidity and mortality than nonminorities. The American Medical Association (AMA) encourages physicians to examine their own practices to ensure equality in medical care. The AMA's mission is to achieve health equity by mitigating disparity factors in the patient population.
“Of all forms of inequity, injustice in health care is the most shocking and inhuman.”
— Martin Luther King, Jr., National Convention of the Medical Committee for Human Rights, Chicago, 1966

An Irish proverb says that “When you come upon a wall, throw your hat over it, and then go get your hat.” At IHI, the spirit of this one little saying has inspired many big outcomes. People who are drawn to IHI see beyond walls to the possibilities on the other side. We are inspired and energized by one uniting vision: a future in which everyone has the best care and health possible.
NIMHD envisions an America in which all populations will have an equal opportunity to live long, healthy, and productive lives. To accomplish this, NIMHD raises national awareness about the prevalence and impact of health disparities and disseminates effective individual-, community-, and population-level interventions to reduce and encourage elimination of health disparities.
Health Equity Initiative (HEI) is a member-driven nonprofit membership organization dedicated to build a global community that engages across sectors and disciplines to advance health equity. By bringing together and enlisting the efforts of the public and private sectors, professions and communities that have both a stake and an influence on social determinants of health, HEI advocates for improving conditions and achieving equity in health for all. We focus on championing transformative change to advance health equity, supporting knowledge, engaging communities and leaders, and building capacity to address barriers that prevent people from leading a healthy and productive life.
