The Special Collections curates a collection of rare and unique materials documenting the cultural and environmental history of Southwest Florida. Our team works to expand and preserve our collections, develop scholarly resources, and provide global access to the collections through DigitalFGCU

Due to our focus on the cultural and environmental history of Southwest Florida, many of our materials within University Archives and Special Collections can be used to incorporate primary sources into your courses and co-curricular activities.

Big Cypress Collection

The Big Cypress Collection is a photo-journal displaying the former and current state of the Big Cypress National Preserve. Located in Southwest Florida, it is an extension of the U.S. Park Service. A diverse array of native wildlife can be located in the state park, which also provides freshwater for multiple estuaries along Florida's coast.

Ellen Peterson Collection

The Ellen Peterson Collection includes the scrapbook and journal from her national bike trip, family photos, and correspondence from various stages of her life. Also included are projector slides, Sierra Club awards, an energy map of SW Florida, posters, bumper stickers, Happehatchee flyers, and pictures of her Florida home which later became a part of Happehatchee. The largest part of this collection are newspapers documenting her effort to save the planet.

Kevin Erwin Environmental Ecology Collection

The Kevin Erwin Collection consists of personal papers, correspondence, field notes, and documents regarding Kevin Erwins' personal career as well as investigations, cases, photographs, publications, and administrative records documenting Erwins' career as a world-renown consulting ecologist.

Southwest Florida Environmental Collection

This collection contains reports and surveys related to the environment, environmental impact, and development of Southwest Florida.

Digital Collection

University Site Selection & Development

This collection consists of documents regarding university site selection in southwest Florida, including site submissions, site proposals, and contractor correspondence. It also includes documents on the development of FGCU from 1992 through 1998.
